Persistent jaw pain, tension headaches, or worn teeth may be signs of suffering from TMJ (also referred to as TMD), a potentially painful structural jaw disorder that can usually be treated successfully to lessen or entirely suppress discomfort and pain.

At Dental Wellness Phoenixville we use advanced technologies such as the NTI Tension Suppression System, a device that helps prevent jaw disorders (“TMJ”), without drugs or surgery through the reduction of specific muscular activity that causes these issues.

Does TMJ go away on its own?

Some patients only suffer from TMJ on occasion, and it’s more common to notice TMJ symptoms during times of stress, like when an important exam or event is coming up. In other cases, patients deal with TMJ symptoms regularly regardless of what’s going on in their lives. Whether you deal with symptoms like jaw soreness, morning headaches, or jaw clicking or popping, we recommend seeking treatment to relieve your symptoms and protect your teeth and jaw.

What is the process for receiving TMJ treatment?

The first thing you will want to do is schedule a visit with our team. In some cases, it’s obvious that a patient has TMJ due to the dental damage or gum recession that they have. We can also review the symptoms that the patient has noticed to form a diagnosis. Then, we will take impressions of your teeth that will be used to create your custom oral appliance. These impressions will be sent to an off-site lab, your nightguard will be created, and we will have you come in to try it on and bring it home once we receive it.

Does TMJ require surgery?

TMJ does not typically require surgery, although it can become necessary in more severe cases. Common treatments for TMJ include physical therapy exercises, muscle relaxers, and Botox. These treatment methods can also be used in combination with a custom oral appliance for TMJ to relieve pain and reduce TMJ symptoms effectively. Not sure which options are right for you? Please schedule a visit with our office, and we’ll be glad to assist you.
