Benefits of Clear Aligner Therapy

There are a number of benefits to using clear aligners over traditional metal braces, and even more benefits that come with using clear aligners instead of forgoing orthodontic treatment completely. Invisalign and Six Month Smiles have many combined benefits and some pros and cons that are different from each other that we will be happy to discuss with you at your consultation. These benefits include:

  • Clear, almost invisible appearance
  • Ability to correct a wide variety of issues
  • No dietary restrictions
  • Convenient maintenance and cleaning
  • Less discomfort than metal braces
  • Can cost about the same as metal braces

Clear aligner therapy is a good option for patients who have mild to moderate orthodontic issues, as severely misaligned teeth can sometimes require traditional metal braces to fix. Six Month Smiles is especially good for patients whose orthodontic problems are closer to the mild side and for patients who want a fast treatment. If you are interested in Six Month Smiles specifically, we can assess your smile at your consultation to determine for sure if you would be a good candidate. Even if we recommend another treatment option, we will still do everything we can to ensure that your teeth are straightened as quickly and efficiently as possible.

It is not recommended that patients eat or drink liquids besides water while wearing clear aligners. Not only would eating with them feel uncomfortable, but there’s a possibility that they could be damaged or break. You would also have to take them out to clean them afterward, so the best course of action is to simply take them out or wait to eat or drink. The good news is, once you take out your clear aligners you are free to eat anything you would normally eat, whereas with traditional braces you have to avoid certain foods completely for the duration of your treatment.

You can expect to feel at least a little soreness or tenderness after you begin wearing clear aligners for the first time and also when you throw away an old aligner and start using the next one in the series. This is because your teeth begin shifting almost right away, so the soreness means that your smile is already starting to become straighter! There are a few things you can do to help alleviate some of the pain at home. You can try eating cold foods like popsicles or using an ice pack to help numb your gums, or you can apply dental wax to spots on the aligner that are causing the soreness. If you try home remedies and over-the-counter pain medication and nothing seems to help, please contact our office so we can assess the situation.

The time frame for orthodontic treatments vary from patient to patient. As the name implies, the average treatment time for Six Month Smiles is approximately six months. This is because these aligners only straighten the front teeth that show when you smile, so they can usually be straightened in a shorter time frame. For Invisalign and other clear aligner brands, the average treatment time is between 12 and 18 months, but it can be as short as six months or as long as 24 months. At your initial consultation, we can give you an estimate of how long your treatment plan will be.
