You’ve just had a root canal—now what? While the hard part is behind you, taking care of your tooth afterward is just as important. What you do in the hours and days after treatment can make a big difference in your comfort and healing.
Here’s what to expect—and how to take care of yourself after a root canal.
Expect Some Soreness
It’s normal to feel mild to moderate discomfort for a few days after your root canal. Your jaw might be sore from keeping your mouth open during the procedure, and the area around the tooth may be tender. Over-the-counter pain relief and a soft-food diet can help during this time.
Be Gentle With the Tooth
If you received a temporary filling or crown, avoid chewing on that side of your mouth until the permanent restoration is placed. The tooth will be more fragile than usual. Stick to soft foods like soup, yogurt, or scrambled eggs, and avoid anything hard or sticky that could dislodge the filling.
Keep Up With Oral Hygiene
Good hygiene is essential after a root canal. Continue brushing and flossing, but do so gently around the treated area. Rinsing with warm salt water a few times a day can help reduce inflammation and keep the area clean. If your dentist prescribed antibiotics, be sure to take them exactly as directed—even if you’re feeling better before the prescription runs out. This helps prevent infection and supports a smooth recovery.
Follow Up for the Final Restoration
Most root canal treatments are completed in two steps. After cleaning and sealing the tooth, you’ll need a permanent crown to protect it. Don’t skip this part. Without the crown, the tooth is at risk for cracking or further damage.
